Melindria Tavoularis draws her inspiration from her surroundings. Her artistic expression is rooted in her urban and rural experiences. The buildings and landscapes which have touched the artist's life are often the subject of her work. Melindria's art is a visual journal of her life experiences.
While living in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City, she was inspired by the vitality and diversity of its architectural structures, and they became in integral part of her creative process. More recently, the land and seascapes of the State of Maine, Québec, and the Maritime and Atlantic Provinces of Canada have defined her art.
The artist's preferred media are watercolor, dry and oil pastel, India ink, colored pencil, and graphite. Each painting and drawing is executed on 100% cotton (rag) paper. The interrelationship of her chosen medium(s) and paper is vital to her creative process. It determines the emotional intent of her art.
Melindria has been exhibiting publicly since 1978. Her work has been accepted into group exhibitions in NYC, upstate New York, New England, and Canada. She has also exhibited as a solo artist. Most recently, the Galerie Restigouche Gallery of Campbellton, New Brunswick presented a retrospective exhibition of her art entitled, "From New York to New Brunswick". The one hundred and ten selected paintings and drawings spanned a thirty-five year period.
The artist is a native New Yorker, and has painted since childhood. She has a B.A. degree in Art History from the University of Wisconsin (Madison campus). While attending the university, Melindria enrolled in drawing and sculpture courses in the fine arts department. Upon returning to NYC, she attended private watercolor and drawing classes, and enrolled in sculpture courses at Hunter College.
